PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoch-making two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide that can reduce diffractive effect and that can suppress spread of an optical beam out in the air. SOLUTION: Either the arrangement of rods or the shape of the rods themselves, or both the arrangement and the shape, are varied near the output end of a photonic crystal waveguide. Then, the output end of the waveguide is designed to have a structure in which, for example, an opening is expanded or equivalently expanded, in the two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide.
