The optimum setting of the electrodes in an electrolysis furnace is obtained by making an arbitrary change in the distance between the electrodes at regular time intervals, determining the tendency of the energy consumption change then taking place, and controlling the anode position in relation to this tendency, until the slope of this tendency, following an arbitrary distance adjustment, becomes nil. The method is used in the electrolysis of aluminium to reach minimum energy consumption under the operation conditions obtaining at any one time. The total energy consumption during the electrolysis of aluminium is composed of the electrical power used and the additional energy supplied by the anode carbon. |
