Alcohols are prepared by contacting an organic acid or anhydride with a C 1 -C 6 monohydroxy alcohol in the presence of a molybdenum-containing catalyst in a first reaction stage to produce an esterified product, introducing at least a portion of said esterified product into a second reaction stage where it is contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a molybdenum-containing catalyst to produce an alcohol-product-comprising mixture, separating the alcohol product from such mixture and separating and recycling at least a portion of the C 1 -C 6 monohydroxy alcohol contained in said mixture to the first reaction stage. Examples prepare neo-heptanol. |
