A method and an apparatus of decoding selectively in a wireless communication system are provided to reduce the whole power consumption of the modem chip by minimizing the power consumption generated by a decoder without the deterioration of performance of the decoder. A method for decoding selectively in a wireless communication system includes the steps of: determining a threshold value corresponding to format information of a packet to be received; comparing the threshold value with the number of received slots for the packet, and determining whether to decode received data related to the packet(205); storing the received data without decoding the data if the number of the received slots is not greater than the threshold value(201); and decoding the received data for restoring the packet if the number of the received slots is greater than the threshold value(207).
