A method and an apparatus for driving a mobile display device are provided to extend duration of a battery by reducing power consumption of a backlight unit by regulating a dimming signal according to a power saving mode signal. An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel(100) displays an image by adjusting optical transmittance of LCD cells, which are formed on 4-color sub-pixel regions. A battery(110) is charged with voltage. A power saving mode signal generator(120) detects the remaining amount of the battery and generates a power saving mode signal. A controller(130) sets a gain value according to the power saving mode signal, converts 3-color input data to the 4-color data according to the gain value, and generates a dimming signal according to the power saving mode signal. A panel driver(140) displays the image corresponding to the 4-color data on the LCD panel. An inverter(150) generates a lamp driving voltage according to the dimming signal. A backlight unit(160) generates light according to the lamp driving voltage and irradiates the light to the LCD panel.
