METHOD FOR CONVERTING GRAYSCALE IMAGE TO COLOR IMAGE AND THE DEVICE

A method and an apparatus for converting a gray scale image into a color image are provided to decode a gray scale JPEG(Joint Photographic Experts Group) image without the additional cost of hardware. A header changing unit(321) changes component number information of an SOF(Start Of Frame) marker and an SOS(Start Of Scan) marker included in header information of a gray scale image. An entropy decoding unit(322) decodes one MCU(Minimum Coded Unit) block including a luminance component of the gray scale image by referring to an entropy coding table. A chrominance information inserting unit(323) inserts bit information which is preset in response to chrominance information into the last bit of the decoded MCU block. A data integrating unit(324) integrates the changed header information and the MCU blocks into which the chrominance information is inserted, and generates a color image.
