1,146,731. Vinyl acetate. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. 14 June, 1966 [23 June, 1965], No. 26530/66. Heading C2C. Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting a gaseous stream of ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen in the presence of a platinum group metal, and in which up to 40% by volume of carbon dioxide based on the total volume of the gaseous reactants, is added to the gaseous reaction mixture. Platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium and rhodium metals, oxides or salts are used as the catalysts. A proportion of 3 to 40% of carbon dioxide is preferred and may be added directly or mixed with recycle ethylene. The catalyst may be supported and activators such as alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts or other metal salts may be included. |
