An avatar generation method in a portable terminal is provided to be mounted with a stereo camera in the terminal while a 3-dimensional avatar is easily generated from a stereo picture taken through the camera, thereby increasing the usage and a user's convenience of the mobile phone camera. Plural images taken at different points of views are obtained for one object(S110). Features of partial images are extracted for the obtained respective images of the object(S120). Partial images of an avatar corresponding to the respective partial images are obtained by using the extracted image features(S130). The obtained partial images of the avatar are synthesized with an avatar corresponding to the object at each point of view, and the avatar is expressed by interworking at each synthesized point of view to display a 3-dimensional avatar for the object(S140,S150).
