A system (10) automatically configures and sets up an ad hoc wireless medical network (40). Wireless peer devices (22<SUB>1</SUB>, 22<SUB>2</SUB>, , 22<SUB>n</SUB>) each includes a peer BCC interface module (24<SUB>1</SUB>, 24<SUB>2</SUB>, , 24<SUB>n</SUB>) for authenticating a patient and transmitting device identification of a selected peer device (22<SUB>1</SUB>, 22<SUB>2</SUB>, , 22<SUB>n</SUB>), and a short-range network interface module (30<SUB>1</SUB>, 30<SUB>2</SUB>, , 30<SUB>n</SUB>) for setting up communication connection between the peer devices (22<SUB>1</SUB>, 22<SUB>2</SUB>, , 22<SUB>n</SUB>). An active identification device (28), which is linked to the patient (14), authenticates each selected peer device (22<SUB>1</SUB>, 22<SUB>2</SUB>, , 22<SUB>n</SUB>) and automatically associates each selected peer device (22<SUB>1</SUB>, 22<SUB>2</SUB>, , 22<SUB>n</SUB>) with the patient (14).
