PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrafine fiber having excellent uniformity of diameter in spite of extremely thin fiber diameter and having high strength, and a nonwoven fabric of the fiber; and to improve laser irradiation efficiency as an energy source for a thinning process. SOLUTION: The method for producing the ultrafine fiber comprises irradiation of a raw material fiber of a thermoplastic polymer 1 with infrared rays 8 having narrowed irradiation energy density distribution to heat the fiber and reduce viscosity of the fiber, elongation of the raw material fiber by an electrostatic force generated by applying high voltage between the raw material fiber and a target 11 to reduce the fiber diameter, and collection or winding of the ultrafine fibers by guiding the fibers to a collection plate or a bobbin used as the target 11.
