PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by hydrogenation of dinitroresorcin sulfonate. SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by hydrogenation of (A) 2-sulfonic acid-4,6-dinitroresorcin preferably in (B) water or 10-90 wt.% aqueous solution of an inorganic acid (e.g. sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid) preferably at about 50 deg.C to the reflux temperature. In the above-mentioned reaction, if necessary, a sulfuric acid scavenger may be added to prevent the eliminated sulfone group not to recombine. The component B is preferably used about 2-50 weight times per component A in terms of agitating efficiency and volumetric efficiency.
