PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer capable of preventing and automatically suppressing the creasing of a thermal transfer ribbon. SOLUTION: In this thermal printer 1, a thermal transfer ribbon 10 supplied from a ribbon supply mechanism 4 and wound on a ribbon winding mechanism 5 is passed between a platen roller 3 and a thermal head 2 together with a sheet 9 for printing. The thermal printer is equipped with an image analysis section 16 for analyzing an image pattern printed on the sheet from print information provided to the thermal head 2, and a ribbon control mechanism 7. The ribbon control mechanism 7 has a rotatable ribbon control bar 21 which presses a ribbon position 10a across the ribbon winding mechanism 5 arranged on the downstream side of the thermal head 2 and the thermal head 2, and rotates the ribbon control bar 21 corresponding to the image pattern analyzed by the image analyzing section 16.
