A method of recording or reproducing data on or from a recording medium is disclosed, comprising steps of: reading a control information including version information from a specific area of the recording medium, the version information including a first version information and a second version information, at least one of the first version information and the second version information being used to determine a backward compatibility with respect to reading or writing of the recording medium; and controlling a recording or reproducing of data on or from the recording medium based on the version information.
