Equally spaced rectangular notches with pointed roots are cut in bearer bars which are held by a comb-type jig. Crossbars laid across the notches are fixed by a double-cornered punch which grooves the bearer bars either side of each notch and forces the intervening metal inwards to neck the top of the notch and grip the crossbars.
