An electric arc welding wire having an outer cylindrical surface and an electrically conductive layer on the surface wherein the conductive layer comprises an ultrathin layer of copper with the copper content being 99% pure or greater. Furthermore, the layer can be made with a thickness of less than about 0.50 microns when using essentially pure copper.
