The incorporation may take place at any stage in the manufacture or processing of the thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic material may be, e.g. polyurethane, polyacetal, polyesteramide, styrene/ acrylonitrile copolymer, polypropylene, polyformaldehyde, trioxan copolymers, polyethylene terephthalate, or a linear polyamide or copolyamide, e.g. nylon 6, 6/6, or 6/10, or polyamides fromed from C 4-18 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and diamines. The composition may also comprise glass, carbon or metal fibres, whiskers or asbestos; lubricants, e.g. Ca or Zn stearates, waxes, aliphatic dicarboxamides or dicarboxylic acid esters; stabilizers, e.g. substituted phenols, naphthols, or mercaptans, e.g. N - (p - hydroxyphenyl)benzamide; antistatic agents; dyes or pigments, e.g. Cd yellow; or fillers, e.g. kaolin or chalk. The P/lactam mixture may be made by melting the lactam before, during or after blending; the mixture may comprise 25-90% P and 10-75% lactam. The P may have particle size 0À01-15 mm. The granular thermoplastic material may be mixed with the additives continuously or batchwise and the resulting premix fed to an extruder where the thermoplastic material is melted and mixed homogeneously with the additives, the mixture being then extruded as a strand or ribbon; which is then granulated. Preferably the extruder has a port for withdrawing gases; the lactam may be volatilized and removed during mixing. The extruder may be single- or twin-shaft; or disc-kneaders or mixing-rolls may be used. The P/lactam mixture may be first masterbatched with some of the thermoplastic material. The proportion of P in the final composition may be 1-20% by weight based on polymer. |
