An image forming apparatus, a method for exchanging a sub-unit, and a method for repairing an image forming apparatus are provided to easily repair the image forming apparatus by displaying a necessary repair work through a first display panel and a second display panel. A document reading device(13) is movably installed between a first position where the document reading device is placed when an image is formed, and a second position retreating from the first position at an image forming apparatus main body(12). A first display panel(116) is used when the document reading device is placed at the first position. A second display panel(120) is used when the document reading device is placed at the second position. According to first operational information displayed on the first display panel, the document reading device is moved to the second position from the first position. According to second operational information displayed on the second display panel when the document reading device is placed at the second position, a sub-unit mounted in the image forming apparatus main body is exchanged.
