The device has an electronic control unit executing a program for detecting an intake air quantity and an ignition instant. Two estimated torque calculation units calculate an output torque of an internal combustion engine as output torques based on a load of the engine and a map, respectively. The map is provided such that the speed of the engine is a parameter in the map. A calculation unit calculates a digital value based on a characteristic of a torque converter connected to the engine. The control unit establishes one output torque as an estimated torque based on the digital value. An independent claim is also included for a method of calculating an estimated torque of an internal combustion engine.
