The lighting unit has a semiconductor light source and an oval-shaped optical unit in front of the source. The optical unit has a central lens unit (5) with a convex-shaped decoupling surface arranged in a light radiating direction. The optical unit has light guiding side walls (6, 6`, 6``) attached to an edge side of the lens unit and extending like a cup in the radiating direction. An opening area formed through a front edge of the side walls is covered by a light disk. The lens unit has a thickness, which is smaller than a distance of the front side of the lens unit to the light disk.
