A welding assembly joins the ends of two work pieces e.g. steel strip and has a welding head (2) and a welding tool (3). A drive unit drives the relative motion between the welding head and the two work pieces. The welding head further incorporates a roller assembly (4) that smoothes out surface irregularities in the weld seam.
