PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for isolating from the natural world a microorganism having an ability for acting on a sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound such as benzothiophene to decompose the compound, and then degrading the sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound with the microorganism. SOLUTION: This method for degrading the sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound is characterized by degrading the sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound with a microorganism belonging to Rhodococcus or Corynebacterium and having an ability for degrading the sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound. According to the present invention, the sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds including alkylated benzothiophenes can effectively be desulfurized in mild conditions. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
