PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for supporting a workpiece, which correctly support the workpiece to attain high working accuracy. SOLUTION: The method of supporting the workpiece in a machine tool to work an outer peripheral surface of the workpiece W while rotating the workpiece W around its axis includes a step of temporarily supporting the workpiece W by a pair of temporarily supporting members 40A and 40B. Both ends of the workpiece W are pinched from end surface sides by a pair of pivots 44A and 44B while it is temporarily supported, and a center axial line L1 of the workpiece W is aligned with and positioned on a rotation axial line L2. While the workpiece W is positioned, both ends of the workpiece W are held from the outer peripheral side by a pair of chucks 46A and 46B.
