The device for supporting a raised load, especially a motor vehicle, with a displaceable and lockable cylinder (4) inside a pillar-form element (2), has the cylinder connected to the pillar-form element or to its standing foot (3) via a compression spring element (7) which in the unlocked position pushes the cylinder from out of the pillar-form element. The spring element is located inside the cylinder which is hollow in form. The spring element may be a gas spring.
