The device has acceleration sensors (BS1,BS2), which are arranged behind a bumper lining and produces a signal. A speed measuring device produces another signal. An evaluation circuit controls a pedestrian protection system based on the signals. The evaluation circuit suppresses the control of the pedestrian protection system, when one of the signals lies below a predetermined threshold value. The evaluation circuit is coupled with a brake assembly so that the circuit controls the pedestrian protection system based on a third signal of the assembly.
