In a device for piercing the closure cap of a compressed gas container (not shown) and suitable for inflating a life-jacket by means of piercing plunger 24 held cocked by balls 27 against the action of a spring and released by withdrawal of a spindle 32 from therebetween following disintegration of a water soluble plug 35 normally shrouded by a sleeve 40 held by balls 14 against a biasing spring 41, the balls are held by the enlarged end of a spindle 11 projecting from the underside of a plunger 3 loaded on its upper side by an adjustable spring 6 and open at its lower side to water pressure which at a predetermined depth of submersion is overcome by said spring 6 to allow the shroud 40 to be displaced by spring 41 and water to gain access to the plug 35; a safety pin 8 being assumed to have been removed at a submerged depth greater than that at which the spring 6 is free to act. In the event of pin 8 being removed prior to the wearer of the apparatus landing on water the shroud 40 is immediately displaced to the position allowing access of water to the plug 35.
