Theft of fuel from a vehicle fuel tank 10 is monitored by detecting both when and where fuel is being siphoned from the fuel tank. The amount of fuel in the tank is measured using a fuel quantity sensor 12 (e.g. measuring fuel level, mass or volume) along with the position of the vehicle (e.g. using GPS sensor 14), and the location of the vehicle is stored. An indication of the vehicle activity may be measured (either from the position of the vehicle or from determining whether the vehicle ignition is on or off). Simultaneous removal of fuel and introduction of another fluid, such as water, may also be detected. The status of the fuel cap (on or off) may also be measured. If fuel theft is detected a signal S by communication means 16 may be transmitted to the police. |
