Method and apparatus for analyzing images of cells and extracting biologically significant features from the cell images, such as from granules representing intra-cellular organelles. An image is received in which a marker identifies at least one type of intra-cellular granule within the cells. The edges and local maxima are detected in the received image. The intersection positions where the local intensity maxima, after dilation, intersect detected edges in the image are identified. The identified intersection points are then dilated to define granules within the biological cells of the image. The extracted features can include the number of granules, the total surface of the granules or the mean or maximum intensities of the granules. These features can be determined on a cell-by-cell basis, or for particular regions within a single cell, or for various groups of cells. The cells may be hepatocyte cells. |
