PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cermet for a cutting tool which is improved in plastic deformation resistance and further improved in wear resistance, chipping resistance and breakage resistance. SOLUTION: The cermet for a cutting tool is composed of: 0.2 to 5 vol% of a dispersion phase with a B1 type structure composed of at least one kind selected from the carboxide, nitroxide and carbonitride-oxide of at least either Zr or Hf; 5 to 20 vol% of a bonding phase consisting mainly of at least either Co or Ni; and the balance hard phase consisting mainly of Ti and composed of at least one kind selected from the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of the group 4a, 5a, 6a elements in the Periodic Table in which at least either Zr or Hf is used as an essential element and their mutual solid solutions.
