PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a separation membrane which makes a performance stable and enables a continuous operation while preventing a degradation of the separation membrane, and an apparatus. SOLUTION: The method for operating the separation membrane and the apparatus comprises a continuous or intermittent load of a raw water supply system to the separation membrane with water including an organic substance containing polyphenol during the operation of passing raw water to the separation membrane to separate it into permeated water and concentrated water.
