An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to improve the gap defect of a seal pattern due to the thickness variation of an organic insulating layer generated during a manufacturing process, by forming the organic insulating layer to have different thicknesses in a pixel area and a peripheral area. A pixel area and a peripheral area are defined on a first substrate(110) and a second substrate(310). A thin film transistor(T) is formed in the pixel area of the second substrate, wherein the thin film transistor includes a gate electrode, a semiconductor layer, a source electrode, and a drain electrode. An organic insulating layer(380') is formed on the resultant surface of the second substrate including the thin film transistor. The organic insulating layer has a first organic insulating layer(380'a) positioned in the pixel area, and a second organic insulating layer(380'b) positioned in the peripheral area, wherein the second organic insulating layer is thinner than the first organic insulating layer. The organic insulating layer has a contact hole(385) for exposing a portion of the drain electrode. A pixel electrode(390) is formed on the organic insulating layer, and electrically connected to the drain electrode through the contact hole. A seal pattern(400) is formed in the peripheral area between the first substrate and the second substrate to bond the two substrates. |
