A flexible pipe joint comprises end flanges 26, 27, screwed to pipe ends 16a, 16b, resilient compression rings 31 arranged between the end flanges, a rigid separator ring 32 between each two compression rings, the rings having a central opening communicating with the bores of the pipes, and connector means between the flanges arranged to permit flexing. The connector weave comprise bolts 36 and the holes 33, by which the bolts 36 pass through the rigid separator rings 32, are of comparatively large diameter, and on the flanges 26, 27 are welded convex washers 44 which mate with movable concave washers 45. To protect the inside surfaces of the rings 31, 32, spacer rings 40 are provided, and the separator rings 32 have shoulders 41, 42 on which the rings 40 rest. The inner surface of each compression ring 31 has a V-groove 46, so that the lips of the groove will be forced outwards by fluid pressure and seal against the separator rings 32. Parts 47 in the spacer rings 40 allow fluid behind them to flow into the bore. Variations in the section of the separator rings 32, giving shoulders of different shape from those shown at 46, are shown and described, or the shoulders may be dispensed with and the rings 40 held between the rings 32 by suitably proportioning their relative diameters. The flexible joint has special application to underwater drilling, where a conductor pipe surrounds a drill, for the passage of drilling mud, and has a flexible joint at each end to allow for the movement of the floating drilling barge. |
