A liquid crystal display and a driving method thereof are provided to generate a common voltage through a chip-typed voltage generating unit and to easily change the output of the chip-typed voltage generating unit in a programmable way. A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal panel having a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix form and a common voltage generating unit for generating and applying at least one common voltage to the pixels. The common voltage generating unit includes a control unit(711) storing control information and a common voltage generating chip(712) for generating the common voltage by the control unit. The common voltage generating chip has a multiplexer(713) for receiving and selectively outputting the control information, a digital-analog converting unit(714) for converting the digital signal into at least one analog signal in accordance with the output of the multiplexer, and an output buffer(715) outputs the analog signal as the common voltage.
