A pulverized mixture of tri-calcium phosphate, silica and coke is injected into an axially heated rotary furnace, the heat being provided by plasma arc torches to give a temp. of some 4500 degrees C, liquid calcium silicate is eliminated as it is formed and phosphorus is isolated as a vapour for condensation. Previous methods have involved a preliminary agglomeration stage for the tri-calcium phosphate, and have produced limited outputs at low efficiency and about 2000 degrees C. An inert gas such as nitrogen or argon is suitable for powder injection as well as for the plasma arcs.
|
