A watermarking method and apparatus are provided to adaptively embed a watermark in an image and extract the watermark according to characteristic of the image to reduce deterioration of the image. An ADEW(Adaptive Differential Energy Watermarking) and CBWT(Crosswise Binding Wavelet Tree) based watermarking method includes a step of wavelet-transforming an image and generating a wavelet tree from the wavelet-transformed image(401,410), a step of performing crosswise binding on the wavelet tree(420), and a step of embedding a watermark in the crosswise-bound wavelet tree when the energy rate of a cross pair of the crosswise-bound wavelet tree is smaller than a predetermined threshold rate(430).
