An ATM operated in a manager mode by using a manger card and an operation method thereof are provided to only permit the manager mode for maintaining and updating the ATM by authenticating a manager having the manager card storing authentication information of the manager. A manager card reader(24) reads the manager card storing an authentication key, which includes authority information for accessing the ATM, and an authentication term. A key input part(22) receives a password for the manager mode from a manager computer connected the ATM. An authenticator(25) performs authentication by generating a decryption key from combination of the received password and the private key stored in a private key database(26), and determining whether the decryption key is identical with the authentication key read from the manager card. A controller(20) includes an algorithm for receiving a control command from the connected manager computer if the authentication is successful, and refusing the control command if not. |
