An image sensor and a method for detecting the contour of an image in the image sensor are provided to efficiently and correctly detect the contour of the image by sharing information of an adaptive interpolation system while reducing a hardware load. An image sensor processes analog pixel data output from a pixel array into digital pixel data. The image sensor includes a first kernel generator(17) for generating a first kernel by using the digital pixel data, a color interpolator(20) for performing color interpolation on the pixel data by using the first kernel, a luminance detector(22) for detecting a luminance signal from the pixel data output from the color interpolator, and a pattern detector(18) for classifying the first kernel by patterns. The image sensor further includes a second kernel generator(19) for generating a second kernel by using the first kernel for each pattern, a contour detector for detecting a contour by using a contour edge detection mask corresponding to the second kernel, and a contour corrector(23) for correcting the luminance signal by using the detected edge.
