An elevator device has a damping device mounted on a lower part of the vertically moving body that is lifted and lowered in a hoistway, and the damping device damps an impact of a collision of the vertically moving body against a lower part of the hoistway. A part of the damping device is projected below from the lower end of the vertically moving body, and the part is greater in length than the length of a stroke of the damping device. The remaining portion of the damping body is placed within the range of the vertical dimension of the vertical moving body.
