An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device are provided to control the brightness of backlight according to the average value of a histogram by setting a histogram slope using a backlight gain value. A liquid crystal panel(22) displays images corresponding to a data signal. Data and scan drivers(24,26) supply data and scan signals to the liquid crystal panel, respectively. An image quality improving unit(42) obtains a histogram based on first data(Ri,Gi,Bi), generates second data(Ro,Go,Bo) corresponding to the luminance of the histogram based on a backlight weighted value and the histogram, and generates at least one brightness control signal(Dim) according to the average value of the histogram. A timing controller(30) realigns the second data, supplies the realigned second data to the data driver, and controls the data and gate drivers. A backlight unit(38) irradiates light to the liquid crystal panel. An inverter drives the backlight unit according to the brightness control signal.
