Provided is a lithium rechargeable battery, which is improved in safety by preventing stresses resulting from prismatic and cylindrical lithium batteries and is suitable for a large-capacity battery for a hybrid electric vehicle. The lithium rechargeable battery(200) comprises: an electrode assembly(220) including a first electrode plate having a first electrode current collector and a first electrode active material layer formed on at least one surface of the first electrode current collector, a second electrode plate having a second electrode current collector and a first electrode active material layer formed on at least one surface of the second electrode current collector, and first and second electrode taps(226,227); a can(210) for accommodating the electrode assembly(220); and a cap assembly(230) which seals a top opening of the can(210). The can(210) is formed into a column shape including a long curvature radius part(211) of which the radius of curvature is formed relatively larger than that of the other part, and a short curvature radius part(212) of which the radius of curvature is formed smaller than that of the other part. |
