<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a failure in an automatic registration adjustment due to stain on a recording medium, etc. beforehand and eliminate waste of the recording medium and an ink in a recording device for performing the automatic registration adjustment. <P>SOLUTION: The optimum value of the registration adjustment value of each registration item is detected and temporarily memorized (S2 to S5), and then it is judged whether the difference between each optimal value and the setting value of the last registration adjustment value is within the range of ±1 (S7). If the difference is out of the range of ±1, a check pattern for making users check the recording state of the result of the registration adjustment with each optimal value is printed (S8), and a dialog for urging users to input the information on the check and the proprieties of the registration adjustment result is indicated (S9), and then it is judged that any of the proprieties is input (S10). When the difference is within ±1 together with "acceptance" being input, the detected optimal value is memorized as a new setting value of the registration adjustment value (S11).
