PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type color liquid crystal display device capable of enhancing the availability of light rays from a light source, thereby making a luminance high. SOLUTION: The projection type color liquid crystal display device includes: a red light source 20(R), a green light source 20(G), and a blue light source 20(B) where pluralities of light emitting elements are arranged in two dimensions and which can control currents supplied to the light emitting elements to control the intensity of light; an optical element which is arranged in front of the respective light sources and converge light from each light emitting element into parallel light; a heat radiator mounted on each light source and radiating heat from the light source; a red display panel 26 modulating a red image, a green display panel 25 modulating a green image, and a blue display panel 27 modulating a blue image; a dichroic prism 24 putting together video light beams transmitted through the respective display panels; and a projection lens 28 projecting a color image composed by the dichroic prism on a screen.
