PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stop/start control device for an internal combustion engine for actualizing early ignition start for the internal combustion engine by stopping the internal combustion engine at a position where less energy is required for starting it. SOLUTION: During engine stop control, a cylinder to be in a compression stroke and/or an expansion stroke at stopping the engine is predicted. Right before engine stop control, when the cylinder is in an intake stroke, fuel is supplied through an intake port into the cylinder. Then, the engine is stopped at a crank angle position where less motor torque is required for starting it. At starting the engine, the fuel filled into the cylinder is burnt.
