<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming a pattern having a correct shape on a transfer material, and preventing erroneous detection. <P>SOLUTION: A composite machine 1 capable of preventing leakage of classified documents has an image superimposing means 9 for superimposing a pattern showing predetermined additional information to input image data; a printing means 10 for forming an image on the transfer material based on the image superimposed by the image superimposing means; a recognizing means 5 for recognizing the shape of the pattern of the image formed on the transfer material; and a control means 6 for enabling to form the pattern to be superimposed by the image superimposing means 9 on the transfer material, based on a result of recognition by the recognizing means 5.
