SWING POSITION RECOGNITION AND REINFORCEMENT

An attachment is used for determining deficiencies in the swing mechanics of a user. In a golf training and simulation system, a video capture device is capable of imaging the attachment, such that the system is capable of identifying rotation of the shaft about the shaft rotational axis of symmetry, the apparent angle of the shaft with relation to the camera, the apparent length of the shaft and/or the position of the shaft within the orbit of the swing. The system quickly and accurately determines deficiencies in swing mechanics and is capable of providing feedback to the user. Parameters relating to club rotation and apparent length may be compared to known standards for a plurality of reference swing positions. Shaft rotation, angle and/or position within the swing orbit may be determined from imaging of the attachment and may be used to determine rotation, direction and/or velocity of a ball hit by the golfer in a golf simulator or may be used to overlay a shadow pro that follows the user's swing at the user's own pace. A cylindrical attachment provides improved contrast without shadows, even in direct sunlight, allowing the system to be used outdoors for instruction on a driving range.
