In a process to regulate the operation of an automotive piston engine, the camshaft is coupled to a camshaft/crankshaft phase adjustment assembly. The phase adjustment assembly sets a pre-determined phase target value (PHA SP). An actuator compensates for an alteration in torque, by adjusting the air mass flow to the combustion chamber (9) arising from the change in the phase target value.
