The method is for maintaining the depth of the waterway (2) of a river (1) in which stable platforms (8) always remain under the water and are provided with closable openings (10) and so form the known side damming bodies (9) outside the waterway. The damming bodies are installed in the waterway in such a way that these underwater platforms, which are built according to the aforementioned principle, and the water volume (5) of the river constantly dams up the water level to a minimum height which is required for navigation on this river.
