<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive matrix type liquid crystal display element capable of displaying an image having excellent visual angle characteristics and a high contrast ratio even in a high duty driving. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1 is a VA mode liquid crystal display element having a retardation compensation layer. The liquid crystal display element 1 has a liquid crystal cell 2 having a negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal layer interposed between a pair of substrates subjected to vertical alignment treatment, a pair of viewer side polarizing plates 3 and 4 sandwiching the liquid crystal cell 2 and disposed in a crossed Nicol state and the retardation compensation layer 5 provided between at least one of the polarizing plates 3 and 4 and the liquid crystal cell 2. An angle formed by the phase advance axis of the retardation compensation layer 5 and the alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer when voltage is applied is so set as to be smaller than the angle formed by the absorption axis of the polarizing plates and the alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer when voltage is applied and to be >0° and <50°. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
