1,164,333. Olefin polymerization catalyst. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 6 March, 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 10459/67. Heading C3P. An olefin polymerization catalyst is made by mixing (a) an organometallic compound of the formula R n AlX 3-n , where R is hydrogen, an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl radical; (b) a compound of the formula TiCl 3 .<SP>1</SP>/ 3 AlCl 3 ; (c) a compound of the formula PX 3 ; and (d) a compound of the formula X 2 , wherein in all the formulae X is halogen and n n is 1, 2 or 3. Preferably (a), (c) and (d) are first mixed together; and (b) subsequently added. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, 1- butene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-heptene, 4- methyl-1-pentane and 1-octene. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in a hydrocarbon diluent. Hydrogen may be present during the polymerization reaction. The polymers are recovered by known techniques and may be extracted with xylene. |
