An hydraulic fluid comprises a major amount of a functional fluid base stock and 0À005-15 wt. per cent of a perfluoro alkylene ethercontaining compound of the formula wherein R is alkylene, alkoxyalkylene or perfluoroalkylene, R 1 and R 2 are each fluoro or trifluoromethyl provided that not more than one R 1 represents trifluoromethyl and provided that not more than one R 2 represents trifluoromethyl, R 3 is fluoro or trifluoromethyl, R 4 is hydrogen or halogen provided that when R is alkylene or alkoxylalkylene R 4 is hydrogen, R 5 is perfluoroalkylene having at least two carbon atoms and R 6 is selected from hydrogen, trifluoromethyl, perfluoroethyl, wherein R 7 is selected from hydroxyl, the residue of an ester-forming compound and the residue of an amide-forming compound, R 8 is alkyl or alkoxyalkyl and R 9 is hydrogen or a residue of an alcohol-reacting compound, q is 1 or 2 and p is a whole number having a value of at least 1 provided that when R 7 is hydroxyl q is 1 and provided that when R 9 is hydrogen p is 1, a is zero or 1 and n and m are each zero or a whole number up to 50, provided that the perfluoro alkylene ether-containing compound contains at least one perfluoroalkylene unit containing from two or three carbon atoms and further provided that the perfluoro alkylene ethercontaining compound contains at least 50% by weight of perfluoro alkylene unit. Suitable base stocks are hydrocarbon-, halohydrocarbon- and ether-hydrocarbon-phosphorus esters, thioesters amides and silicates, alkyl thiophenes, mixtures of these base stocks, and blends of the phosphorus esters or amides with halogenated compounds. Extensive lists of suitable base stocks and perfluoro alkylene ether-containing compounds are given; those used in the examples are CF 3 CF 2 -CF 2 -O-CFHCF 3 and dibutylphenyl phosphate, tetraisopropyl silicate N - methyl - N - butyl - N1 - methyl - N1 - butylphenylphosphorodiamidate, and a mixture of hydrocarbon oil, o-xenyl diphenylphosphate and m-dibromobenzene. The base stocks can contain viscosity index improvers and other additives such as aromatic mercaptans and epoxidized hydrocarbons.
