<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus provided with an adjusting means which allows even an unskilled user to easily adjust intervals between a write-in head and a photoreceptor, and to provide an adjusting method. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes the adjusting means adjusting the interval between an LED head 227 writing in an optical image to the photoreceptor and the photoreceptor drum to be a reference interval (A) and the adjusting means includes a stipulating member 7 attached to the LED head 227. The interval adjustment between the LED head 227 and photoreceptor drum is carried out by integrally moving the LED head 227 and the stipulating member 7 until the stipulating member 7 is brought into contact with the photoreceptor drum. At this time, the interval between the LED head 227 and the photoreceptor drum is (A-B). Next, the LED head 227 and the stipulating member 7 are moved for a distance (B) in the direction which is opposite to the photoreceptor drum.
